Unconscious Bias

Have you ever wondered why you do certain things and then regret about it later?  We have a tendency to delegate meaningful and important tasks to certain people on our team, people we like, believe, and connect with rather than somebody who may be better qualified for the job.  We tend to hire only people from a certain ethnic background, specific type of education, from Ivy League schools, with a certain sexual orientation, or who speak a certain language.  We tend to judge people on the basis of “first impressions,” or “gut feeling.”

If you are guilty of such behavior, or know someone who is guilty of the same, then have been introduced to Unconscious Bias.

Howard Ross describes Unconscious Bias as, “……the tendency or inclination that prevents unprejudiced consideration of a question.”  Virtually any preference we have is likely to have some bias associated with us.  Choice of movies, TV shows books, food choices, etc are examples of such hidden or unconscious bias.  This happens without our conscious knowledge, something that stands in stark contrast to our values.  Hence it is called Unconscious Bias.
